Getting to the Heart of Youth Transformation

This article highlights initiatives, funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, that seek to build up youth and create positive opportunities and strong community connections that prevent or mitigate their involvement in violence. Many of these initiatives divert youth from the system or provide specific support for young people who are system-involved and returning to the community. They bridge the gaps in access to these opportunities by providing other wraparound supports. Keys to the success of these efforts are an understanding of young people's strengths, interests, and potential as well as the process to help them realize these attributes. By exploring the approaches that these initiatives take to connect with youth, seek their insights, and provide meaningful opportunities, other youth violence reduction initiatives can assess and refine how they support justice-impacted youth.

Reaffirming and Refining Your Gang Reduction Efforts

Derived from peer sharing and technical assistance events held with Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention FY2018 and FY2019 Gang Program grantees in late 2020 and early 2021, this innovative guide compiles valuable insights, resources, and stories from the field shared by expert practitioners. It can serve a broader audience of practitioners who are implementing comprehensive gang reduction programs in their local communities. Some topics covered in this guide include improving understanding of gang involvement and developing strategic and trauma-informed responses to gang violence and victimization.
